This dry riesling is a total mineral bomb, with intense notes of wet stone, flint, and sea salt dominating both the nose and palate. The influence of blue Devon slate and quartzite soils is unmistakable, creating a razor-sharp, chiseled structure complemented by subtle yeasty undertones.
Schäfer-Fröhlich, a family-run winery in Germany's Nahe region, has risen to prominence under Tim Fröhlich's leadership since the mid-1990s, transforming both the estate and the village of Bockenau into revered names in the wine world. Fröhlich's meticulous approach to winemaking, coupled with strategic vineyard acquisitions in top sites, has elevated Schäfer-Fröhlich's Rieslings to among the most sought-after in Germany. The winery's commitment to expressing terroir is evident in their six distinct Grosses Gewächs Rieslings, each showcasing the nuanced differences in microclimate and soil composition. Schäfer-Fröhlich's consistent excellence has been recognized globally, culminating in the prestigious title of "Best White Wine in the World" from James Suckling in 2019, solidifying its position as a benchmark producer of world-class Riesling.
Entirely sourced in the Felseneck, the 2021 Bockenauer Riesling Trocken Schiefergestein offers a fascinating, clear, precise and intense, slate-driven bouquet with crunchy stone and herbal notes. Impressively intense. On the palate, this is a rich and intense, dense and juicy yet also complex and saline, seriously and sustainably structured Bockenauer with a long and intense, very saline finish but also with the generous fruit and juiciness of a great wine. Tim Fröhlich's Schiefergestein is a Best Buy of the vintage. Powerful and long yet with moderate alcohol (12%).
