While orange wine is super trendy in the natural wine world right now, did you know that it's actually the way that wine was originally made in countries like Georgia and Slovenia thousands of years ago?
To make orange wine, winemakers let the grape juice sit on the grape skins for a while before fermentation, like they would when making red wines. The juice stays on the skins for anywhere from days to months, picking up tannins and colors from the skins, giving the wine its orange color and some structure. Many orange wines come from biodynamic or organic vineyards and are spontaneously fermented via indigenous yeasts.
Orange wine can be as diverse in flavor as white and red wines, ranging from juicy and fruity to super tannic and serious. We've included flavor descriptions for all our wines so that you can find the one right for you!
Orange wine is also known as skin-contact wine, skin-fermented wine, macerated white wine, and amber wine. |
