The younger vines from Musigny - which means less than 25 years old at de Vogüé - are always made as a separate cuvée, and rightly so. This comes from white soils and the freshness of the limestone really sings on the palate. It has an impressive structure and concentration with plum, kirsch and black cherry fruit flavours framed by stylish 25% new wood. Drinking Window 2024 - 2032.
The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru is a step up from the Village Cru in terms of delineation and precision. There is an almost sorbet-like vibrancy and energy to this Premier Cru, featuring a bouquet of blue fruit with hints of stem ginger. The palate is medium-bodied and sorbet-like, with good density. Blood orange infuses the black plum fruit, and hints of white pepper appear toward the finish. Excellent.
As readers will know, the 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru consists entirely of declassified young vine Musigny, and the wine naturally bears a certain resemblance to its big brother, unfurling in the glass with aromas of ripe cherries, cassis, dark chocolate and Indian spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a nicely concentrated core of fruit that's still quite primary, having finished its malolactic fermentation only in June/July, framed by chalky underlying tannins and juicy acids.
