"This is one of the most fascinating and delicious reds we’ve tasted all year. Its very pure flavors are a wild kaleidoscope of everything from kirsch to cocoa to cardamon and vanilla. The velvety texture is wrapped around a core of rich red fruit. The structure is magnificent. And what makes it all so surprising is that this blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc is not right out of Carneros central casting. Cool Carneros is much better known for Pinot Noir. Maybe “Phoenix” is a sign of (warmer) things to come. Or maybe the fact that the grapes are grown and the wine is made by Lee Hudson—one of the most famous growers in Napa Valley—is the secret to the wine’s success. Hudson’s “Phoenix” drinks like it costs twice as much as it does. If you have something special happening this summer and want to drink impressively, here’s your wine."
