We are Rochester's #1 source for natural, sustainable wines! We sell biodynamic, organic, and low intervention wine, both traditional and modern. So, what is natural wine? Simply speaking, the ethos behind natural wine is "nothing added, nothing taken away." Natural winemakers strive to let the grapes speak for themselves, so they tend to farm their vineyards following organic or biodynamic principles. They ferment their wines with native, indigenous yeasts, and add minimal sulfur and no other additives. Some of these wines and unfined and unfiltered, so they may have sediment or look a bit cloudy. Two of the most popular types of natural wines are orange wines and pet nats. Don't worry, we have tons of options for each! Orange wines are white wines where the grape juice has stayed on the grape skins for anywhere from a few hours to weeks. This gives the wine its classic orange color as well as some structure from the tannins found on the grape skins. These wines can be anywhere from juicy and fresh to more serious food wines. Pet nat is an abbreviation of Pétillant Naturel, the French term for the oldest, most traditional way of making sparkling wines (called Méthode Ancestrale). These wines finish fermenting in the bottle, giving the wine natural carbonation. These are fun and bubbly; one of our favorites to take to parties. We have a full natural wine selection in the store and online. These wines are definitely staff favorites, so feel free to ask us to help you choose the right natural wine for you! |
